The field of engineering has become very competitive. It is pertinent as aspiring engineers to build our skills and further differentiate ourselves from the crowd. As members of ASU National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) one way we are able to do this is by attending the NSBE National Convention. This year's convention's theme is "Engineering the Foundation for the Future".
NSBE National Convention
The NSBE National Convention is first and foremost a professional development opportunity. It also allows access to potential internships & jobs that offer industry experience. This hands on experience is crucial when starting a career in engineering after graduation.
Some highlights of the last convention include:
"Leader who Lead" workshops focusing on: Time Management, the Benefits of Great Leadership, Effective Communication and many others. Social change workshops, which allowed attendees to learn about and discuss different social changes & issues within the workplace. It is important to not only be technically skilled but also socially aware to be a well-rounded employee. Resume workshops Opportunities to present research posters Professional development, specifically covering things like the transition from student life to being a young professionals Intimate networking opportunities NSBE ASU
NSBE ASU
NSBE ASU is one of hundreds of NSBE chapters around the world. Our holistic mission is “to increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community”. NSBE ASU fulfills this mission with community service outreach projects, study tables, and corporate opportunity seminars.
In the past year, the members of NSBE ASU have forged an outreach partnership with McClitock High School as we do fun engineering projects with up and coming youth to introduce them to STEM. As well, we work on giving back to the community through organizations like ProjectCure, packaging medical devices to be sent to impoverished regions. We also partner with individual engineering and technology firms to inform the members about different employment opportunities in their field. We have conducted career fair, resume, and interview prep workshops to help our members excel in those areas. Finally, we also have held social events such as NSBowling to foster a supportive family environment where all of our members feel comfortable reaching out to each other for guidance or help.
