Serve Today, Change Tomorrow

Who We Are:

We are the Spirit of Service Scholars, a group of 13 ASU students from a variety of academic disciplines dedicated to becoming leaders in public service. Throughout the year, we mentor 20 high school students, deemed Junior Scholars, who are committed and excited to solve the challenges they see in our communities. However, due to limited funds and access to programming, they rarely get the opportunity to explore what being a public service leader truly means and what steps in their education are necessary to meeting their goals.

The Goal:

We need your help to provide our Junior Scholars with enriching exposure to public and nonprofit organizations as well as college readiness. $5000 would allow us to sponsor these students’ participation in the Public Service Summer Leadership Academy, a week-long residential program that promote public service, civic engagement and community solutions. For many of our Junior Scholars, this is their first time exploring a college campus, meeting community leaders and developing plans of action that extend beyond their high school.

The Public Service Summer Leadership Academy (PSLA): Throughout the PSLA experience, students spend time networking, observing and serving needs of communities while developing professionalism and college readiness skills. Participants live in the Taylor Place residential hall on ASU’s Downtown Phoenix campus, and all programming is provided by Spirit of Service Scholars (us!) In June 2015, participants:

· Completed community-service projects at the Society of St. Vincent de Paul while interviewing organizational leadership on the needs of the organization.

· Toured the Arizona State Capitol and the Arizona State House of Representatives Chamber · Participated in workshops writing that focused on writing resumes, grants and scholarship essays and personal statements.

· Researched, prepared and pitched awareness campaigns they would bring back to their schools to meet the needs presented by St. Vincent de Paul. In order to fully prepare these students to exceed their own potential, we must nurture their desire to serve before they leave high school. Please help us meet our goal!
