Mary M. Schroeder Prize Endowment: Call to Law Clerks

Call for Clerks to Honor Mary M. Schroeder and Her Legacy

Since her appointment to the Arizona Court of Appeals in 1975 and US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in 1979, Judge Mary M. Schroeder has generously contributed her time and talents for the benefit and betterment of Arizona and the country: not only for the people who make up these institutions, but also the broader legal community and the people whose lives have been influenced by her work. Among the many people she has influenced, we – her law clerks – have benefited particularly. This experience has helped open doors, made connections, and provided mentorship that has materially impacted the lives and careers of many of us.

Now we have a chance to give back and help augment MMS’s legacy!

The Mary M. Schroeder Public Interest Prize at the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University is awarded annually to a third-year law student(s) committed to a practice in public interest law (working 30 hours per week or more with a public interest organization following bar admission). Since it was first endowed, the Prize has been used to encourage graduates of ASU Law to provide legal services to:

  • persons of limited means and charitable, religious, civic, community, governmental and educational organizations in matters that are designed primarily to address the needs of persons of limited means; and
  • individuals, groups or organizations seeking to secure or protect civil rights, civil liberties or public rights, as well as law-related service to charitable, religious, civic, community, governmental and educational organizations of limited means in matters in furtherance of their organizational purposes.

The Mary M. Schroeder Public Interest Prize Endowment now stands at over $242,000. In connection with our 2019 reunion marking MMS’s 44 years on the bench, we want to rally MMS’s former clerks to enhance the ability of the Endowment to promote law in the public interest.

Let’s join together to each give our most generous gift to bring the Prize Endowment up to $300,000. That means our collective goal is $58,000!

We realize not every former clerk can contribute at the same level, therefore varying suggested amounts are indicated on the right of this page. You can also make a multi-year commitment by emailing abby.muller@asu.edu.

We look forward to a successful campaign and your participation will help encourage future law graduates in honor of Mary M. Schroeder!

Yours,

The Gift Sub-Committee of the 2019 Reunion Committee

Patricia K. Norris (1977-78)

Matthew Weil (1991-92)

Sarah Konsky (2004-05)
