Sun Devil Robotics Club - Sun Devil Smackdown
The Sun Devil Robotics Club (SDRC)
We are a group of students and faculty at Arizona State University spanning multiple disciplines, including engineering, biology, and other sciences. This academic year, we are thrilled to be hosting the inaugural Sun Devil Smackdown, a combat robotics competition held at ASU.
Sun Devil Smackdown - Combat Robotics Competition
In February of 2020, we are hosting a competition for Arizona K-12 students, as well as undergraduate and graduate students across the state, to build—and perhaps, destroy—a 'combat' robot, similar to those on the BattleBots television show. The students will be designing and fabricating a robot in the 3lb weight class with the sole purpose of causing havoc to its competitors. Each robot will cost approximately $300-$500, including spare parts. This opportunity will allow students from across the state and beyond to practice their STEM-skills in an exhilarating head-to-head competition that is unlike any other at the collegiate level.
With the premise that there will be sparks and flying metal, we want to ensure that the students are not going to be hindered by their finances. To alleviate the financial barrier and give incentives for the students' ingenuity, we are planning to help fund and provide prizes for the participants. Furthermore, as this is the first competition of its kind here at ASU, we will need to develop and manufacture safety measures such as enclosures and other devices to ensure the well-being of all the participants and spectators involved.
With your help, we can give Arizona roboticists an opportunity unlike any other in the state and bring an exciting, new facet to the engineering and robotics scene. On behalf of Sun Devil Robotics and everyone involved in this endeavor, we would like to invite you to our team and extend a massive thank you for your generosity for allowing this to happen.
