Alexander Lumala is a first-generation college student from Scottsdale, Arizona, studying software engineering at ASU. For Alex, choosing ASU was an obvious decision because of its proximity to where he grew up, low cost and educational resources.
“I am very happy with my choice and hope to explore research opportunities on campus,” Alex said.
In receiving a scholarship from ASU’s Black Alumni chapter, certain financial burdens have been alleviated for Alex and his family.
“Paying for college was always a looming threat for my family. After getting a scholarship from the ASU Black Alumni chapter and a few other organizations, my family no longer needs to refinance our house to send me through college debt-free,” said Alex.
This incoming first-year student secured an internship with Amazon for next summer and is excited to see what it will be like working in the Big Tech industry. However, Alex is keeping his mind open and hopes to explore other avenues at ASU, such as academia and research.
In the future, Alex aspires to work toward a master’s degree or pursue a PhD. Alex’s hobbies include PC building, fitness and politics.
Across the nation, the ASU Alumni Association has awarded over 500 scholarships worth nearly $500,000 since 2014. Support Black Alumni Chapter scholars, like Alex, by donating today!
All funds will be deposited with the ASU Foundation and will be invested in perpetuity as an endowment.
