Isabella Merkel, an ASU sophomore studying aerospace engineering from Franklin, Wisconsin, has always loved making music. Because of her talent, dedication and time spent with the Sun Devil Marching Band, Bella is a proud recipient of this year’s Devil’s Horns Alumni Club Scholarship. According to Bella, these funds will relieve some of the financial burden that comes with having out-of-state tuition.
“I will be able to enjoy my hobbies a bit more as well as enjoy my marching band experience more,” Bella said.
When Bella toured ASU for the first time, she fell in love with the beauty of the Tempe campus. Having recently added a certificate in planetary science, Bella appreciates ASU’s exclusive opportunities for her chosen major which many other colleges don’t offer.
Throughout her time at ASU, Bella has been working toward joining the 4+1 accelerated master’s program in robotics and autonomous systems.
“In addition to that, I currently work as a research analyst on the Perseverance and Psyche missions through ASU, and I would love to go on to work for NASA at JPL or another facility,” Bella said.
Bella’s favorite ASU memory so far was her first Sun Devil Football Game Day. Performing in the pregame and halftime performances, Bella was a first-year student and anxious to remember all of her music and routine.
“When the time came to run out, all of the nerves just washed away, and I felt so excited and proud to be performing out on the field,” she said.
