A big thanks to all of our donors who helped us raise 128% of our goal! With the scholarship funds raised, we are able to provide the opportunity for twelve participants to be a part of our workshops at no cost to them. If you would still like to contribute to the scholarship fund, gifts can now be made here: http://asufoundation.org/hwom.
The Problem with Stigma
Mental illness touches the lives of everyone. Statistically you or someone you know will deal with mental health issues at some point in your life. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 1 in 4 adults experience mental illness in a given year; and approximately 2/3 of adults with a diagnosable mental illness do not seek treatment. Stigma causes many individuals living with mental health conditions to experience fear, shame, and isolation. Many avoid seeking adequate treatment because they are afraid others will find out about their condition.
Our Solution
Honest Words, Open Minds creates space for a unique form of dialogue because it is both creative and embodied, using the magic of theatre, creative movement, and the imagination to provide a platform for the voices of those who have been silenced by the stigma of mental illness. In collaboration with professional artists, individuals with mental health conditions participate in a series of drama workshops in which storytelling, improvisation, and creative movement are used to explore issues relevant to their lives. When you donate to Honest Words, Open Minds you provide the opportunity for twelve participants to be a part of our workshops at no cost to them.
Why We Care
We believe that the Phoenix community would benefit from a space where people living with mental illness can “tell it like it is” and combat stigma. This project is close to the hearts of each team member who makes up Honest Words, Open Minds. Each of us has been affected by mental illness in some way or another. In addition, we have witnessed the transformative experience that socially engaged theatre can have with groups in the community. As teaching artists and arts administrators, it is our desire to provide a space for dialogue about the realities of mental illness and put an end to stigma. Your donation to Honest Words, Open Minds could provide the opportunity for twelve participants to be a part of our program at no cost to them. Please donate today.
